Rangers star Borna Barisic continues to be snubbed for Croatia left-back Borna Sosa at the World Cup as Lovro Majer has Ibrox fans asking what might’ve been.

Gers left-back Borna, 29, is the only Ibrox representative at the tournament in Qatar but found himself on the bench for the second game in a row as VfB Stuttgart star Sosa started v Canada.

And it was a decision which was merited in the end as the Croatians ran out comfortable 4-1 winners over the Canadians despite Bayern star Alfonso Davies heading the Canucks into an early lead by scoring their first-ever World Cup goal.

Borna Sosa preferred to Rangers’ Barisic as Croatia beat Canada

It took only two minutes for Davies to power the ball in the back in the net but Croatia roared back into the game before halftime with Andrej Kramaric showing superb composure to slot the ball home after previously having a goal ruled out.

Marko Livaja would then turn the game on its head by half-time by firing past the Canada goalkeeper from the edge of the box.

The second half would have a similar complexion with Kramaric adding another composed second and whilst Rangers fans would’ve noticed Borna Barisic’s absence for Borna Sosa, the final goalscorer Lovro Majer also caught the eye.

The Rennes midfielder couldn’t miss as he was squared the ball to make it four but if you cast your mind back to January 2020 Rangers were reportedly amongst the frontrunners to sign the player.

But as things would transpire Rennes would move to sign the midfielder for a reported initial £10m and they’ll be mighty glad that they did.

Lovro Majer continues to inspire in France and has been marked out a long-term successor to the 37-year-old Luka Modric at Real Madrid, with Rennes valuing the player at £52m.

As Borna Barisic still awaits his first World Cup minutes for Croatia and Bundesliga star Borna Sosa continues to get the nod, Rangers fans are also musing over what might’ve been had they moved for Lovro Majer two years ago.

Meanwhile, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Ibrox parting message gives plenty of food for thought.
