Rangers told they’ve pulled off a coup landing player with ‘unbelievable pace’

Former Rangers midfielder Alex Rae believes former Chelsea defender Dujon Sterling could be a ‘great’ addition to Mick Beale’s squad at Ibrox.

James Tavernier’s defensive ‘deficiencies’ may have been a little exaggerated over the years. But, still, it’s safe to say the right-back with over 100 Rangers goals is not exactly renowned for bone-rattling tackles or timely interceptions.

So Dujon Sterling – signed on a free-transfer from Premier League giants Chelsea – promises to give Beale’s Gers side an altogether different dimension.

Alex Neil described last season’s Stoke City loanee as one of the best one-v-one defenders he has come up against in his managerial career.

Sterling may lack Tavernier’s devilish delivers or pinpoint set-pieces. But, against more threatening opposition, his searing pace, expert positioning and tactical flexibility could come in very handy.

Rangers bring in Dujon Sterling from Chelsea

The 23-year-old has even been labelled the ‘new Calvin Bassey’ by some. And if Sterling ends up leaving Ibrox for around £20 million somewhere down the line – a la Bassey when he joined Ajax back in 2022 – then this will go down as an inspired piece of business from a Rangers side who’s recruitment during the early Beale era provides plenty of reason for optimism.

“I’m pleased Michael Beale is getting his work done early. (Sterling) has already been dubbed the ‘new Calvin Bassey’,” Rae tells the Sunday Post

“It’s vital to shape up the first-team squad as quickly as possible. I like the fact Dujon Sterling has been brought in.

“When I was at Reading last season (as an assistant coach), we came up against Stoke City. Dujon caught my eye. He is powerful and has unbelievable pace. If he hits the ground running, then it will be a great sign for what’s to come.”

Sterling, a right-back by trade, can also play in a back three. As Rae points out, this will give Beale ‘extra flexibility with his formation and tactics’.

Rangers have also snapped up Kieran Dowell on a free from Norwich City; Jack Butland and Jose Cifuentes expected to follow. A deal for Luis Palma is also still on the cards, though Aris’ £5 million asking price could put the winger out of Beale’s reach.
