Rangers to miss out on talented Euro 2024 striker as transfer rivals launch £5m bid

The Rangers striker position remains a subject of hot transfer debate.

With number nine Cyriel Dessers firmly in the spotlight at Ibrox, Philippe Clement even snarled back at a question on the striker ahead of the clash with Dynamo Kiev.

The jury remains out on the big Nigerian hitman with Rangers fans crying out for a reliable frontman who will take the big chances when they come in tight matches.

Brazilian striker Danilo is working his way back from injury but is also yet to prove his worth at Ibrox. Or begin to pay the £6m fee attached to his name.

Hamza Igamane has been spotted in first-team training for the first time with Clement clear that the £1.7m summer signing will be slowly introduced to the team.

It’s left Rangers fans wondering if there will be in any more investment in the position and now one name closely linked to Ibrox looks increasingly likely to move elsewhere.

Conway subject to £5m bid

Bristol City striker Tommy Conway had quite the season last year.

Making headlines by scoring in not one but two clashes against Premier League West Ham in the FA Cup, the striker’s 12 goals convinced Steve Clarke to bump the Scotland U21 up to the senior squad for Euro 2024.

Whilst Conway would make his Scotland debut in the disappointing campaign in Germany, back at home the striker is making headlines amid a contract stand-off with the Robins.

Out of contract next summer, Bristol City are clear they’d sooner sell Tommy Conway that lose him for nothing and there has been plenty of transfer interest.

Rangers were first linked to the Scotland star at the turn of the year, before Ibrox links to Conway reappeared heading into the summer.

But as the transfer window bottlenecks, it turns out the striker likely won’t be moving to Rangers after all.

That’s because Middlesbrough head the list of suitors for Tommy Conway, with Sky Sports claiming that Hull City have launched a £5m move for the hitman.

The claim also credits English Championship side Burnley with an interest but there is no mention of Rangers.

Rangers change transfer tact

As the Tommy Conway transfer battle intensifies down south, we suspect the news will not perturb the Ibrox recruitment team.

Whilst Rangers may well have had one eye on the 22-year-old Scotland international, the sorts of fees and wages involved in the deal go against the club’s transfer intentions this summer.

Rangers have aimed to sign young players with high ceilings from emerging markets and have slowly begun to move away from the inflated English market.

With Philippe Clement clear the club will need to sell before they can buy this summer too, £5m seems an awfully large amount to go splurging on a striker.

Especially when other areas of the squad require much more attention.

Rangers are known to be on the hunt for a commanding ‘number six’ type midfielder with the club also looking for a versatile forward who can play across the flanks or through the middle.

Despite this, Rangers continue to be linked to a number of striker options with Lawrence Shankland and Albion Rrahmani the most high profile this summer.

Rangers number nine Cyriel Dessers has also been routinely linked with an exit.
