So far this summer, there has been less speculation about the striker’s future than most supporters would have expected, but things are now beginning to ramp up.
A Bola reported earlier this week [via Sport Witness] that Porto boss Sergio Conceicao is a long-term admirer of Morelos and that they were considering trying to sign him to replace Moussa Marega, who has joined Al Hilal.
At that stage, it was asserted that while there was interest there, Rangers’ desire to receive a fee in the region of €20m would be a major stumbling block.
It’s stated that Morelos is now ‘analysing’ a proposal, while it’s suggested that he’s keen on a transfer as he believes it would be a step up.
There’s no suggestion that a fee has been agreed with Rangers, though, and it’s acknowledged that doing so will be a challenge for the Portuguese giants.
If Morelos’ representatives really are in discussions with Porto, that’s clearly a very significant step.
It would be something of a surprise if the 24-year-old opted to move to the Primeira Liga, given that he has previously stressed his desire to play in the Premier League.
However, if there hasn’t been any interest from England, Porto are a strong option, given their guaranteed Champions League group stage spot and their reputation as a club that develops and sells on talented player.
Rangers fans would be gutted if El Bufalo left this summer but with the forward only under contract until 2023, the club may feel that it’s the right time to cash in if a big offer is tabled.
