Rangers are set to pip megabucks Premier League pair Man City and Newcastle United and secure a new deal for midfielder Alex Lowry.

The Scottish youth international, 18, has been the breakthrough star of this season and interest has been bubbling ever since he broke onto the scene at the turn of the year.

An elegant, creative and confident midfielder, Alex Lowry is regarded as one of the key talents at the club but Rangers reportedly face competition to tie the player down.

With his contract set to expire next summer, Rangers would realistically need to sign Alex Lowry down on improved terms or cash in this summer.

Rangers reportedly closing in on Alex Lowry deal

Football Insider are now claiming that Rangers are closing in on a new deal for the talented midfielder which could see him agree terms until 2025.

The same outlet has appeared to follow the situation closely and had claimed that Rangers planned to make Alex Lowry the best paid youngster at the club with the contract.

They also suggested that Newcastle United head of recruitment Steve Nickson met with Lowry’s representation regarding a possible move to St James’ Park.

Premier League giants Man City are also said to have “held discussions” regarding a possible move to the Etihad’s youth set-up.

But Rangers appear to have staved this interest off for now in what would be a major coup for the club in signing Alex Lowry down on a new contract.

By signing Lowry down not only do Rangers secure a leading young talent to play in the first team, but they protect their asset ahead of any potential sale.

If clubs now want Alex Lowry, and he continues to develop as expected, then they will be expected to cough up just like Everton were for Scotland international full-back Nathan Patterson.

Celtic fans went into meltdown over the transfer fee as Scotland’s premier club broke their transfer record.
