Rangers have reportedly responded to a multi-million-pound bid from Serie A club Cagliari for forward Alfredo Morelos, according to A Bola via Glasgow Live.
A Bola have covered Morelos’ situation extensively this summer, providing regular updates on Porto’s alleged pursuit of the Colombia international.
In this latest report, it’s claimed that the only club to have submitted a formal bid for the Gers star in this window is Cagliari, who went in low at €8m (£6.8m).
It’s asserted that that bid was rejected immediately and that Rangers will not enter into negotiations with any club unless they are prepared to open the bidding at €15m (£12.8m).
Porto are said to be continuing to monitor the situation after accepting that a game of patience is required.
The Dragons need to replace former star striker Moussa Marega after the 30-year-old left Portugal to join Saudi Professional League club Al-Hilal.
Rangers fans would have been expecting plenty of speculation about Morelos ahead of the window after he netted 17 goals and notched 13 assists to help the Light Blues to the Premiership title and to progress deep into the Europa League.
This report appears to confirm that the club’s resolve hasn’t really been tested yet, though.
€8m is nowhere near enough for a player who has proven himself in European football and only if the ante is upped considerably will the board have a decision to make.
Porto may well be prepared to take things deep into the window, though, and it’s important that potential replacements are identified now so that Rangers won’t be left short if their asking price is eventually met.
Morelos isn’t the only current Ibrox star to have been linked with an exit, but Rangers’ hopes of holding on to another in-demand attacker appear to have been given a big boost.
