There has been plenty of speculation involving Rangers and left-backs in this transfer with the future or Ridvan Yilmaz a daily source of discussion.
The problem is, one by one, the players who are said to be on Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen’s wish list is shrinking as the clock ticks down.
One name who remains, and perhaps the player who seems to tick the most boxes for Rangers, is Gijls Smal, the Twente full-back said to be a possible contender to replace Ridvan Yilmaz if he departs Ibrox.

Rangers list to replace Ridvan Yilmaz gets Smal-er
Josh Doig made most sense early doors but, for over £5m, he simply can’t be justified despite his Serie A experience, age and home-grown status.
Sassuolu look most likely to win that race dspite Marseille agreeing terms with the young Scot, however, knowing Verona, don’t be surprised if there is another twist or two in that one.
The most exciting link was David Jurasek, bought by Benfica for £12m only in the summer, the Czech international would have been an outstanding short-term option but Hoffenheim have stolen a march and have reportedly agreed a loan to buy deal.
An early prospect was out of contract Kai Wagner currently playing in MLS but he has since put pen to paper on new terms.
Which leaves Gijls Smal.

At around 6ft tall, he instantly has one up on Ridvan Yilmaz if Rangers decide to accept whatever Galatasaray’s next offer might be with the club said to be holding out for over £4.5m.
Smal is able to discuss terms on a pre-contract agreement with a view to moving in the summer, potentially, this makes him more likely to replace Borna Barisic if he is a target but, as Gers boss Clement says, any departures would need to be covered.
Smal is similar in terms of style of play to Ridvan so, despite missing out on the likes of Jurasek, Wagner and Doig, he probably is the most natural fit.
All we need to do now is accept a fee for the Turkey international – this one could go to the last few days and hours unfortunately.
No wonder Rangers fans have high blood pressure.
