Rangers given wake up call as journalist makes Josh Doig bid claim

After an initial flurry of activity, Rangers have yet to sign anyone else since Fabio Silva but one name continues to be a subject of discussion – Josh Doig.

The 21-year old has spent the last two seasons in Serie A with Hellas Verona but he has been tipped to move away from Italy with Philippe Clement said to be interested in adding him to his squad.

It looks like the only chance of seeing the left-back at Ibrox is not with Rangers but with the club that Josh Doig could be set to sign for Marseille for figures that are well out of our reach.

Rangers given price tag if they want Josh Doig

Doig left Hibernian in the summer of 2022 shortly before Calvin Basey joined Ajax.

In an ideal world you sign this sort of player before they make a big move but the timing was just never right.

Plus, the Scotland youth cap had no intention of being a back-up or someone who would hang around the squad to make up the quota numbers.

Writing on his personal website, Alfredo Pedulla of Sport Italia has revealed just how much former Rangers star Rino Gattuso is about to pay for Josh Doig:

“The distance is around a million: OM’s offer is 4.5-5 million plus possible bonuses, Verona’s request is 5.5-6, the bonuses could make the difference.”

The two clubs haven’t agreed a fee yet, as explained by Pedulla, but there is no chance that we will be entertaining this sort of fee for a player who arguably, isn’t as good as the two left-backs we already have.

Doig might fit Gers boss Philippe Clement’s system and philosophy as well as having the physical stature that he likes in a player it’s just that, if money is to be spent in this transfer window, there are other priority areas.

Ironically, if Marseille get past Shankhtar Donestk, they could be heading to Ibrox in the last 16 of the Europa League with Doig in the squad.

It looks like Josh Doig can be added to the long list of players who Rangers, once upon a time, should’ve but didn’t sign.

That ship has sailed now though, probably to the port of Marseille.
