Nils Koppen has been tasked with strengthening the Rangers squad this month.
The Belgian was promoted to technical director and he now has his work cut out for him with significant changes necessary to get back on track in the Scottish Premiership.
We exclusively revealed on Rangers News how Marko Soldo of Osijek was a target for Rangers with Koppen keen to get eyes on a different market.
Defensive midfield is clearly an area of the pitch the recruitment chief and manager Philippe Clement feel Gers are light.
Now there is another name which has emerged from the same market as Soldo and in the same position.
HNL club NK Varazdin’s Leon Belcar is reportedly on Gers’ shortlist for a January switch and he would be a more affordable option than Soldo, it seems.
According to 24 Sata, Rangers have shown interest in the 22-year-old who ticks a lot of boxes in terms of desired credentials.
Leon Belcar joins Marko Soldo as a Rangers January transfer target
Koppen made it clear that he wants players with sell-on value where they can purchase for a low fee and make a sale down the line for a significant profit.
And he would still be early on in his career at that age.
Transfermarkt has Belcar available at around £800k which would also fit the bill.
That compares to the £2.5m Gers would have to spend to land Soldo.
Belcar represents Rangers’ transfer policy at a lower fee
An interesting thing for fans to note would be Belcar’s representatives have already done business in Scottish football over the summer with Aberdeen signing Ante Palaversa from Troyes.
We told you how £5million-rated Marko Bulat was also a Rangers transfer option last year.
Both Belcar and Soldo would offer better value for money than another target, Damian Garcia, who might have been priced out of an Ibrox switch.
What is clear is that a combative midfield player is one that is missing from Ibrox and one Clement clearly hopes to add.
The player has three goals in 17 outings with six yellow cards chucked into the mix.
