Rangers nerves are jangling after Aston Villa reportedly had a £20m bid for Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur turned down – with Glen Kamara cited as a potential alternative.

According to the Guardian, Steven Gerrard and his team have seen a substantial €25m offer for the 24-year-old Uruguayan turned down ahead of the transfer deadline.

Fabrizio Romano is also claiming that Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur have struck a deal with Juve to sign the midfielder.

It means that ex-Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is still in the hunt for a deep-lying midfielder as Aston Villa count the cost of losing Marvellous Nakamba to injury.

The Zimbabwean international could be out for the season and the likes of Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma and Rangers’ own Glen Kamara have been touted to replace him.

With much competition for Bentancur amid high wages and fees – and with Brighton star Yves Bissouma valued at £50m – it raises questions surrounding potential late interest in Glen Kamara.

Glen Kamara cited as Aston Villa Bentancur alternative

According to reports earlier in the week, Villa would turn their gaze towards the 26-year-old Rangers star if a Rodrigo Bentancur move didn’t come off.

As things stand, it looks unlikely that Villa will be able to sign the Juventus midfielder meaning that hole in the Aston Villa squad still needs to be plugged.

Rangers star Glen Kamara was a favourite of Steven Gerrard’s and the Aston Villa coaching staff during his time at Ibrox and the Finnish international will be known to the club.

However as things stand there has been no official approach for the Rangers midfielder and anyone coming in will be expected to stump up.

Glen Kamara is contracted to Ibrox until 2025 and any interested parties will be well aware they will need to get their chequebook out to sign the ex-Arsenal Academy kid.

Famously signed from Dundee for £50k in the January of 2019, Glen Kamara has gone on to cement himself as a vital part of the Rangers team, making 136 appearances for the club.

Meanwhile, a failed former Steven Gerrard signing has left the Ibrox club on loan after failing to make the grade in Govan.
