Rangers miss out on January winger transfer deal but given summer move encouragement

Rangers have given word that the winter transfer window has shut early for them with no new faces expected in or departures out.

Philippe Clement would have been hoping for more reinforcements but the manager will now have to struggle on to the end of the season with the squad he has.

A winger had been suggested as a possible deadline day recruit until respectable sources reported an end to business, however, Rangers have been encouraged over a summer move for Relebohile Mofokeng

Rangers ears should prick at Relebohile Mofokeng news

There is a shortage of depth in the attack with Clement now likely to turn to the academy for alternative options.

With Rangers named alongside Barcelona by South Africa manager Hugo Broos as one of Mofokeng’s options, Nils Koppen has a difficult task to persuade the 20-year old winger to move to Scotland.

According to Kooora, a third team was interested but has already given up the chase:

“Al-Ahly coach Marcel Koller’s talk about the winter transfer deals not being over does not mean negotiating with Mofokeng,” reported the Egyptian media outlet.

“Mofokeng is a great and young player, and was in Al-Ahly’s calculations, but Orlando and the player are considering European options during the summer of 2025.”

Should Rangers have targeted a winger in January?

It looks like an open secret that Mofokeng is heading to Europe in the summer when two different sources have said the same thing.

Rangers should have an advantage in that regular first-team football can be guaranteed and finishing in the top eight of the Europa League shows that it is still a club that can compete at the sharp end.

Do well for Rangers and doors will open to the Premier League and abroad.

If the perfect player wasn’t available in January, the recruitment team led by Koppen did the right thing to wait until the summer, and it is easy to see why a winger being chased by Barcelona with 19 goal contributions in 27 games might be top of the shopping list.
