Derek Cornelius’ loan move to Rangers from Marseille in the summer has not panned out as he would have wanted.
Just as he looked like he was adapting to life in Scotland, he picked up a serious injury that ruled him out for a few months.
Despite returning from injury, Danny Rohl no longer seems to rate Cornelius, and he has been on the fringes despite playing for the Canada side during the international break.

Derek Cornelius to leave Marseille in the transfer window
According to French media outlet La Provence, Cornelius is expected to be among seven players to be shown the door by Marseille this summer.
Despite him being a regular for Canada, the Ligue 1 side do not see him as one for the future and are looking to cash in.
That is why they loaned him out in the summer to ensure he gets regular game time and they can use that to demand more for his services when the transfer window opens.
His contract at Marseille expires in the summer of 2028, but they have no plans of keeping him at the club until then.
Rangers are also not keen on exercising their option to buy the centre-back, but will enter the market for other defenders.

Why did things not work out for Cornelius at Rangers?
Cornelius’s tenure at Rangers can be defined by a frustrating combination of poor timing and shifting managerial priorities.
Initially brought in on loan to offer defensive stability, his adaptation to the physical demands of Scottish football was abruptly halted by a serious long-term injury.
This layoff proved critical, as by the time he regained fitness, the tactical landscape under Rohl had evolved, leaving Cornelius without a spot in the team.

Despite maintaining his status as a regular for the Canada national team, he has struggled to convince the coaching staff that he can offer the consistency required for a title-challenging side.
Opting against a permanent deal is a pragmatic move for Rangers as they look to strengthen their backline.
Luke Graham offers a handy alternative, as he is proven in Scotland and will provide long-term value as well.
