Jermain Defoe has made it clear he would like a permanent contract at Rangers, as quoted by the Glasgow Evening Times.

The veteran striker, who turns 37 on Monday, is currently on loan from Premier League side Bournemouth.

The 18-month agreement which saw him relocate to Ibrox in January takes him to the end of his Cherries contract.

Therefore, come the summer, he’ll be a free agent. Yet, despite his advancing age, he has no plans to hang up the boots and instead, wants to stay on in Glasgow.

“I have spoken to the manager and he knows how much I have enjoyed my time here,” said Defoe, as quoted by the Glasgow Evening Times. “Even last season when I wasn’t in the team, he told me to be patient and keep doing what I was doing.”

“It isn’t just about on the pitch it is off the pitch as well. Sometimes the younger players ask me questions and it is always nice to give something back and help the younger guys.

“Both parts are important, but the manager knows I love it here and I know he wants me here. I feel fit and sharp…mentally, I am in a good place.”

Verdict

Jermain Defoe continues to defy logic by banging in the goals in what is his 20th season in professional football.

On Sunday afternoon, he once again demonstrated his finishing prowess at Ibrox, netting a fine hat-trick in the hammering of Hamilton.

That’s now 12 goals in 14 appearances this season [Soccerbase] – an outstanding record.

Although he had a scare in a car crash last weekend, he’s been almost completely injury-free since arriving in Scotland, and if he continues to keep up these sorts of performance levels, surely a permanent deal is inevitable, come the end of the campaign.
