According to freelance sports journalist Owen O’Brian, Rangers are one of a number of clubs tailing the out-of-contract 36-year-old.
The report claims that there are several English Championship sides also tailing the defender with Coventry City appearing to be amongst the most prominent suitors.
O’Brian hosted the story via Medium but it has not been corroborated by any more prominent publications or journalists.
Gary Cahill has been without a club since leaving AFC Bournemouth in the summer and has extensive experience in the English Premier League, also turning out for Aston Villa, Burnley, Sheffield United, Bolton Wanderers, Chelsea and Crystal Palace.

The links come at an interesting time for Rangers, with the Ibrox side’s defence shipping goals and the club short at centre-back despite recruitment in the area this summer.
Rangers continue to be weak from set pieces with £4m summer signing from Liverpool Ben Davies scarcely seen since joining the club this summer.
Scotland international John Souttar is another who barely kicked a ball with Rangers’ recruitment firmly under the microscope as the club’s squad is continuously decimated by injury.
Leon Balogun – now at QPR – was allowed to leave in the summer whilst Niko Katic claims he wasn’t given a fair shot by Giovanni van Bronckhorst before leaving.
The age of Gary Cahill will certainly raise eyebrows but Rangers do have previous with signing veteran defenders to stabilise ailing defences, Hall of Famer Davie Weir joining the Gers as a 38-year-old.
It’s not the first time Rangers have been linked with a move for Gary Cahill, the defender having been linked after leaving Crystal Palace last summer [Scottish Sun].
Meanwhile, one Ibrox star is set to come into the team against Napoli after yet another injury to an Ibrox first-teamer.
