In January, Rangers were heavily linked with a move for Everton’s Tom Davies, since then, the midfielder has hardly kicked a ball.
Rangers signed Nicolas Raskin and Todd Cantwell to bolster their midfield options but, with Tom Davies on a salary of £39,000 per week and off the back of major knee surgery, he always seemed unlikely.

Following the speculation linking the England youth international with a move up the M6, the 24-year old has barely played a full 90 minutes in total across 10 games and his current deal set to expire in the summer.
Sean Dyce, the Toffees gaffer, has already said that no new contracts will be offered – and rightly so – until Everton’s safety and status in the Premier League is confirmed but what this does is leaves Davies open to offers.
What did Michael Beale say about Tom Davies when Rangers links emerged?
Responding to a question about both Cantwell and the Everton midfielder in January, Gers gaffer Michael Beale said of Tom Davies:
“And Tom Davies, he used to kick my Liverpool Under-23s team all around the place.
“There’s a bit of John Lundstram about him. But again, two really good players.
“Not confirming anything with those two. But there’s a lot of players we are speaking to at the moment.”
Beale will be looking for a ‘destroyer” in the summer, a player who can do the dirty work in midfield and allow the likes of Raskin, Cantwell and – hopefully – Malik Tillman to do their thing higher up the park.
Davies’s wages would be an issue, however, and even in the Premier League I’m not sure if clubs would be comfortable paying more due to his recent lack of game time.
A starting role could tempt him north a la Todd Cantwell.
Rangers need more technical ability and quality of options in midfield and Davies certainly offers that.
