Rangers have once again been linked with a move for Sochi striker Mateo Cassierra – who has previous with Ibrox assistant Dave Vos.
A few months ago we were musing over claims in Russian outlet Championat which suggested that an unnamed Scottish club was monitoring the Colombian forward.
Given the player’s history Jong Ajax, we made mention of Dave Vos back then as the links first appeared in January.
Vos had been at Ajax since 2009 and worked predominantly with the club’s second string.
But now Rangers have been directly mentioned alongside Mateo Cassierra by a pundit in Russian football.
“Rangers are definitely in need of a striker,” Roman Naguchev tells Sport24.
“Mateo Cassierra is very interesting for the club.
“The Rangers management has already contacted FC Sochi. (Giovanni) Van Bronkhorst knows this player well.”
Naguchev isn’t the only one either – an unnamed player representative is also quoted as saying “Rangers? We are considering various options”.
Rangers linked to Mateo Cassierra, who appears to have history with Dave Vos
Dave Vos was part of the Ajax set-up when Cassiera, 25, moved from Deportivo Cali for a cool £5m in 2016.
Spending a few years with Jong Ajax before moving into the first team, Vos will be well versed in the striker having spent 10 years working in the Dutch club’s youth set-up before moving to Ibrox at the turn of last year.
During his stint with Jong Ajax, Mateo Cassierra netted 29 goals in 46 games but things didn’t turn out in the top team and he would eventually move back to South America with Racing in Argentina.
After a spell in Portugal with Belenenses, the forward moved to Sochi in 2021 and he has had an explosive season in Russia.
It’s been the goals of Mateo Cassierra which have helped Sochi to 2nd in the Russian Premier League and the forward even topped off his season with a hattrick in the club’s 5-1 demolition of Dynamo Moscow over the weekend.
In total, Mateo Cassierra has netted 14 goals in the RPL this season and he certainly presents an interesting option for Rangers.
Meanwhile, Rangers are also being linked to a top talent south of the border who is said to be interesting Premier League clubs.
