A report in Russia is claiming that an unnamed Scottish club have made a bid for Sochi and ex-Ajax striker Mateo Cassiera – who may well have links to Rangers assistant Dave Vos.
Championat are claiming that a source close to the 24-year-old striker has confirmed there have been offers from clubs in the MLS and in Scotland.
Here’s what the source said with regards Mateo Cassiera.
“Several foreign clubs want to buy Cassierra this winter. Sochi has already received offers from the MLS club and the Scottish Championship club. There are other contenders as well.”
Whilst the report and source is not specific with regards which club may have moved for the forward – who has netted 8 goals and laid on 2 assists in 11 Russian Premier League games – perhaps a look at the playing history of Mateo Cassiera can provide a clue.
Mateo Cassiera played with Ajax whilst Rangers assistant Dave Vos was at the club
Colombian striker Mateo Cassiera started his career with Deportivo Cali in his homeland before moving to the Netherlands with Jong Ajax.
The striker spent five years in total with the Eredivisie club, scoring 29 goals in 46 games for the Ajax B side but struggling to leave an impression on the top team.
Mateo Cassiera would then go on loan moves to the likes of Groningen in the Netherlands and Racing in Argentina before moving to Belenenses in Portugal.
After two years at the Primeira Liga club the striker moved to Russia where his form appears to be attracting interest from Scotland.
Rangers assistant Dave Vos worked extensively in the Ajax youth department over the course of the last decade and suggesting he knows Mateo Cassiera personally is not a tenuous link.
Rangers also already have two Colombian players on their books in Alfredo Morelos and Juan Alegria, something which may well make the move to Glasgow more attractive.
The story – for the moment at least – doesn’t appear to have been picked up elsewhere but we’ll certainly keep an eye on it for the time being.
