Rangers linked star John Lundstram was left out of the Sheffield United squad to face Man United on Thursday night following an intriguing transfer report [Yorkshire Live].

The Gers have been linked with the 26-year-old for some time and in September, the Scottish Sun reported that they could look to agree a pre-contract deal in January.

The Blades were keen for the powerful midfielder to sign an extension, but after negotiations failed in October, Chris Wilder said he believed the player was intent on running down his existing deal, which expires in the summer [Sky Sports].

Earlier this week, Yorkshire Live reported that Sheffield United would listen to cash offers for Lundstam in January, and interestingly, he was subsequently left out of their high-profile Premier League clash against Man United.

The former England youth international had featured in eleven of his side’s 12 league matches prior to the game and it was the first time he’d failed to make the bench all season.

It was a move which confused a number of Blades fans, with no injury concerns raised regarding Lundstram prior to the fixture.

It’s an interesting development in what has been quite a protracted transfer saga.

Lundstram was an integral part of Sheffield United’s success last season but it’s been clear for some time that he has no desire to stay beyond the end of the current campaign, one that will now almost certainly end in relegation for a club with just one point from their opening 13 matches.

Rangers currently have plenty of options in the middle of the park, but with Bongani Zungu only on loan, Steven Davis turning 36 in a matter of weeks and Glen Kamara the subject of plenty of speculation, Steven Gerrard may feel the need to plan for the future.

Lundstram isn’t the only midfielder the Gers are reportedly interested in, though, with another alleged target flying high in the English championship.
