Rangers-linked Scotland defender Ryan Porteous impresses in the famous Hampden victory over Spain as his career continues to rise following a switch to Watford.

The former Hibs star has been roundly lauded for his performances in the 2-0 European Championship qualifying victory over the European giants.

Earning only his third cap for the country, Ryan Porteous played the whole match for Scotland against Spain and ever since the coverage of the player has been positive.

It’s certainly another step forward for the centre-back, whose time in Scotland was blighted by a series of despicable clashes and attempts at proving a hard man image.

Particularly against Rangers, there were times when Ryan Porteous was particularly vicious – see Borna Barisic at Easter Road in 2019 – and that’s why the earlier Ibrox links come as such a surprise.

The Gers were said to be monitoring the situation with Ryan Porteous when Jim Duffy claimed the Ibrox side were serious contenders with the player’s contract running down at Hibs.

This was met with some fury amongst Rangers supporters, who aren’t exactly on the best of terms with a player who has done his utmost to rile them over the last few seasons.

But whilst everyone at Ibrox was aware that there was a player in Ryan Porteous, the Scotland star’s thuggish antics had threatened to derail his career.

Now plying his trade in the English Championship, Watford will be hoping to make a late push for the play-offs in an attempt to earn promotion back to the Premier League.

As Ryan Porteous showed in the Scotland victory over Spain, the 24-year-ld is becoming an increasingly accomplished player and perhaps leaving Scotland was the best thing for him.

Rangers have their own Scotland international centre-back at the club in John Souttar, with the defender looking to get back into the international fold as soon as possible.
