Rangers links to Rafael Santos Borre got plenty of bluenoses excited – but there could be more than meets the eye amid reports of a £3m Atletico Madrid contract wrangle.

The Gers were linked to the Colombian international striker by Football Insider amid a string of recurring links to the region over the course of the last few months.

Rangers’ own resident South American Alfredo Morelos is also being heavily linked with a move to FC Porto, something which would free up funds and space for Santos Borre to sign.

Linked to Atletico, there is more than a fair bit of scepticism regarding any potential Rangers ambitions to pull the deal off.

Now, comments appearing in Argentinian outlet TyC Sports will also do little to reverse this despite the imminent conclusion of the player’s current deal at River Plate.

Amid an interview with Colombian attacking midfielder Juan Fernando Quintero – who is an ex-teammate of Santos Borre at River Plate – the outlet makes some interesting claims.

TyC Sports claim that River Plate not only hold out hope for retaining the striker but there is also a contract stipulation that is potentially holding up any deal.

The report claims that if River Plate wants to retain the forward, they will need to pay a £3m (€3.5m) fee to La Liga Champions Atletico Madrid who at present own 50% of the striker.

This fee can be avoided if they wait for the striker to be released, but the power is now in Borre’s hands who is well aware of this with the suggestion being he could demand a more lucrative contract.

Due to this, the Argentinian club are in no way resigned to losing Rafael Santos Borre and things could be about to get messy.

However, these claims conflict with journalist Nicola Schira who claims the Rangers-linked forward is now set to leave the club.

Schira claims that the striker has taken on two new agents with the player currently demanding a £2m a year four-year deal with a £4.2m signing on fee.

That would make Borre hungry for a £38.5k per week deal; is he worth this excessive wage to Rangers?

Much of these links concern the future of Alfredo Morelos with some reports now claiming that the Gers have turned down a bid from Serie A for the striker.
