The Rangers backroom staff have previously spoken about players on the Gers shortlist who can help fire the club to Champions League qualification next season.
The Ibrox side are looking to make the group stages of the most prestigious club competition in football and are on the hunt for the extra nudge of quality to get them there.
One of the options mooted is midfielder has been Heerenveen midfielder Joey Veerman; a technically astute ballplayer and goalscoring midfielder very much in the Dutch mould and reportedly in-demand around Europe.
There is no doubt that signing the player – who was originally rated at £5m [Scottish Sun] – would present a jump up in quality but another Champions League side appear to have stolen a march.
Italian Serie A side Atalanta have made a name for themselves in the competition in recent seasons and continue to punch above their weight on home and continental soil.
Finishing 3rd in the Italian top flight last season, Atalanta are guaranteed entry to the Champions League and Veerman, 22, is being sought as an option ahead of the new season.
However the report – written by Bergamo e Sport – also claims the Italians are monitoring the situation regarding fellow Dutch midfielder and Bologna star Jerdy Schouten.
The suggestion is that in Italy, Veerman would be very much considered a developing talent where first-team football would come later in his career whereas Schouten is less of a risk.
Gers fans will be hoping that the Italians move for the latter and free up any approach Rangers might be looking to make for Veerman.
Rangers and Atalanta aren’t the only players being linked with the talented midfielder either.
Dutch clubs Ajax, PSV and AZ were also namedropped by Heerenveen captain Henk Veerman – no relation – who claimed he can see the player moving to any one of the five clubs mentioned.
“I’ve read things about Atalanta, Rangers, PSV, Ajax and AZ,” he said [Voetbalprimeur].
“I expect him to go to one of those clubs. I also think that Joey will add value for any club in the Netherlands.”
Rangers are already set to add striker Fashion Sakala and midfielder Nmandi Ofoborh to the club’s ranks on free contracts this summer.
But the thought of adding Veerman to the squad is one which excites fans who reacted to the reported interest on social media.
