Rangers-linked Euro captain suffers second 5-0 battering in a row

Rangers links to Dutch defender Danilho Doekhi continue ahead of the summer but the Vitesse Arnhem captain cannot claim to be on good form after their latest defeat to PSV.

Whilst links were prominent in the January window Doekhi opted to stay around at Vitesse who have been punching above their weight in the Eredivisie as of late.

But following a 5-0 thrashing and cup exit at the hands of Ajax in the week, Doekhi and his teammates have just seen the scoreline repeated against Dutch giants PSV.

Five different scorers swept Vitesse aside on their own patch as PSV bounced back from two straight defeats to keep pressure on Ajax at the top of the division.

The result is the third straight loss for Vitesse in the Dutch top flight – their fourth in total – and means the side has shipped 16 goals in their last four games.

These include the thrashing at the hands of Ajax and defeats to FC Twente (3-0) and FC Groningen (3-1).

This might not fill Rangers fans with defensive confidence when it comes to Danilho Doekhi but Vitesse Arnhem are not quite at the level of PSV.

The results also come amid that continuing speculation between the player and Rangers and Doekhi actually responded directly to questions surrounding Ibrox and his future during the week.

Admitting that he is looking for a new challenge in the summer, all the sounds suggest Rangers are very much in the mix for signing the defender.

“I want to take a new step, I am certainly open to that,” said Doekhi [Daily Record].

“I think the club would like to extend with me, but I hope they also understand that I want to take a new step after four years. I think I’m ready for that.

“I have remained fairly calm about it (interest from Rangers), I know what I have in mind. I did not just want to leave Vitesse in the winter.”

“Of course, if a good opportunity had come along, you can not let it go. But we play European (football, Europa Conference League), are still in the cup tournament and are doing well in the league. I knew I wanted to finish the season here.”

When asked what the key factors would be when it comes time to decide where to go next, he said: “Who the trainer is, what my chances are (to play), what style of play they use.”

After Vitesse were humbled by PSV, next up for the Dutch club and Rangers-linked Danilho Doekhi are Rapid Wien and the welcome distraction of the Europa League Conference.

Speaking of Rangers and transfers, one ex-Ibrox star who left Glasgow in January has just opened his account for his new club.
