Back in the summer transfer window one of the most high-profile players linked to Rangers was Sheffield United striker Oliver McBurnie.
The Scotland international had just gone through a difficult season with the Blades as Oli netted just once in 25 games as the Bramall Lane club were relegated from the Premier League.
But after battling back from injury the Rangers fan striker has finally got his first goal of the season as Sheffield United suffer penalty heartbreak against Premier League Southampton.
McBurnie scored a second-half equaliser in a 2-2 League Cup draw with the Saints but failed to convert his penalty as the Championship lost out to their top tier rivals.
The player clearly enjoyed scoring the goal and fans will be hoping the striker can find his feet, form and confidence again after a difficult 12 or so months.
Rangers-linked striker McBurnie took to Twitter after the game to express frustration at losing out despite a strong team performance:
It’s been a difficult period for passionate bluenose McBurnie and according to the Daily Mail, the Gers were considering offering a £15m Ibrox reprieve.
A £20m signing from Swansea City in 2019 [the Guardian] the notion Rangers would splash out so much for the player was remarkably fanciful.
The interest was eventually rubbished by club insiders Heart & Hand who claimed there was “nothing in” the rumours.
Rangers’ transfer window was instead defined by free transfers as the club brought in Jack Simpson, Nnamdi Ofoborh, Fashion Sakala, John Lundstram and Juninho Bacuna for next to nothing.
Speaking of high-profile transfer links, one reported £7m Ibrox target has been shining for his current side despite them preventing him from moving last month.
