The future of Heerenveen midfielder Joey Veerman was the Rangers transfer saga of the summer but it ended with the playmaker staying put in the Netherlands.

The Gers were said to be lining up a £7m package for the 22-year-old midfielder [Glasgow Times] but after crashing out of Champions League qualification the tone surrounding the interest changed.

Rangers weren’t the only ones being linked; Eredivisie rivals Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord and AZ were all mentioned, whilst Atalanta and Verona were watching on from Serie A.

In the end, no one wanted to stump up the reported €10m (£8m) Heerenveen were demanding for the midfielder and Veerman – reluctantly – remains a De Superfriezen player.

However, things have not started badly for either Heerenveen or Veerman so far this season.

An influential player for the club, Joey has started all five games of their Dutch Eredivisie games to date with Heerenveen now in 3rd place in the nation’s top flight.

Behind only Ajax and PSV, Veerman has helped his side to the upper reaches of the league with four assists, something made more impressive by the fact his side have only scored seven goals.

Three wins, a draw and a defeat have Heerenveen in a strong place and given Veerman’s influence and contribution it’s clear why the side wanted to keep him around if his valuation wasn’t met.

At 22-years-old there is still plenty of time for the midfielder to move on in his career but right now he is playing an increasingly influential role in the middle of the park in the Netherlands.

Rangers fans will be keeping one eye on his progress this season and be watching closely to see if the Ibrox club make a return for the midfielder next summer.

But if Veerman continues to impress in the Eredivisie, that already extensive list of suitors may well get considerably longer by May.

Meanwhile, a former Rangers star has scored a late winner to dump Galatasaray in the Turkish Super Lig.
