Rangers launch deadline day move for Bundesliga winger but journalist sounds transfer warning

Rangers have left it late to make any new signings this January with the Ibrox club potentially set to be busy on transfer deadline day.

Philippe Clement has hinted he wants new arrivals in the door before the window closes at 11pm this evening with only Rafael Fernandes making the switch to Rangers this winter.

With the likes of Kieran Dowell and Rabbi Matondo heading out the door, news is breaking in Belgium that Rangers have their eyes set on a Flemish winger plying his trade in Germany.

But one journalist reckons it’ll take quite a last minute effort from Rangers if they’re to get this late, late transfer deal over the line.

Rangers move for Yorbe Vertessen

Rangers appear to have made an enquiry for Union Berlin winger Yorbe Vertessen, according to reports coming out of Belgium.

Belgian journalist Pieter Jan-Calcoen has taken to X to explain that Rangers have made an enquiry about the 24-year-old Belgian winger.

Ex-PSV Eindhoven winger Vertessen will be known to Rangers technical director Nils Koppen and Calcoen – who works for reputable Belgian outlet Nieuwsblad Sport – claims the Gers have made a late approach.

However, barring what the journalist describes as a ‘charm offensive’ the Ibrox club will be ‘too late’ to complete a deal.

Translated, the Tweet reads: “Ranger FC incidentally tried to convince Yorbe Vertessen to move to Glasgow. Barring a huge charm offensive, the Scots are too late.”

Vertessen has been largely limited to substitute appearances for Union Berlin this season, making 17 appearances (seven starts) and scoring once in the Bundesliga this campaign.

Philippe Clement wants transfer activity

The links to Yorbe Vertessen come after Philippe Clement confirmed Rangers would be trying to secure new arrivals before the transfer deadline.

Speaking after the 4-0 win over Ross County, Clement has shifted the responsibility back onto the Ibrox board.

“It’s not my decision to take,” said Clement. “So, we had clear talks about profiles, about players. And then it’s about the club, if it’s possible or not. And I will see.

“You never know. But if that’s the case, you need to be replaced by at least the same level. That’s what we agreed.

“So, you never know if something crazy comes, but then there needs to be a replacement. So, then it needs to go really fast.”

When asked about specific numbers, the Gers boss said:

“Yes, of course, we spoke about that. They agreed they will try to go for those numbers.”
