Rangers are reportedly chasing Derby County captain Tom Lawrence on a free transfer from the crisis-hit club, but face competition from Sheffield United, Watford and West Brom, according to the Daily Mail.

The 28-year-old Wales international decided to move on this summer after his contract with the Rams came to an end – but it is West Brom who are said to be in the lead in the race for his signature.

After Derby were relegated to League One last season, a number of players moved on before manager Wayne Rooney quit earlier this week.

Lawrence scored 11 times as they tried to avoid relegation taking his tally to 37 goals in 185 games for Derby since joining the club from Ipswich in 2017.

Tom Lawrence signing would bolster Rangers attack and bring more experience to Ibrox

Bringing the Wales forward to Ibrox would be an interesting option for Gio van Bronckhorst’s side but the former Man United kid can’t be viewed as a replacement for Alfredo Morelos.

Having lost the likes of Amad Diallo and Cedric Itten over the summer, Lawrence is the sort of signing that will really heat up competition for places in the Rangers squad next season.

Whether Rangers can beat off the likes of West Brom and convince him to move to Ibrox remains to be seen but the Welshman would be a good addition to the existing squad.

Having almost joined Bournemouth at the start of the year, one stumbling block could be his wages with Lawrence reportedly on close to £30,000 a week at Derby.

That sort of outlay might be beyond what Rangers are willing to pay for someone who wouldn’t necessarily be guaranteed a start every week.

Time will tell though as Rangers prepare to return to pre-season in the next few days and new signings are likely to follow.
