Rangers are locked in a bidding war with Stade de Reims, Lorient, Gent and Celtic for Elfsborg defender Joseph Okumu, according to Sport Bladet.
The Gers have been linked with Okumu for some time, with a previous Sport Bladet report back in March first crediting them with interest.
It was suggested that the Kenya international was a readymade replacement for Filip Helander, should the big Swede move to the Premier League this summer.
Speculation around Helander has died down somewhat recently but the links to Okumu have continued and Sport Bladet have claimed that a bidding war is underway.
It’s suggested that Stade de Reims, Lorient, Gent, Celtic and the Gers have all registered interest and lodged ‘significant’ bids for the 24-year-old.
At this point, the Ligue 1 clubs have the advantage, as Lorient have offered the most at just over SEK 30 million (£2.5m), while Reims are reportedly willing to pay a similar amount.
Another advantage for those clubs is that Okumu has previously stated his desire to play in a top-five European league [Fotbol Transfers].
It looks like there’s still some way to go before an agreement is reached, though, as the report asserts that Elfsborg want as much as SEK 40 million (£3.4m).
It clearly won’t be easy for Rangers to land Okumu, who with a top speed of 34.58kph, was clocked as the fastest player in the Swedish top-flight last year.
Med sina 34,58 km/h var Joseph Okumu, den spelaren i allsvenskan som mätte den högsta toppfarten i fjol. 🔥

Centre-back is an area in which the Gers are currently well-stocked, though, with Helander, Connor Goldson, Leon Balogun, Jack Simpson, Nikola Katic, George Edmundson, Lewis Mayo and Leon King all contracted until at least the end of next season, so one or two senior defenders would surely need to leave Ibrox for a multi-million-pound swoop to make sense.
The 2021 Allsvenskan season is currently in progress and Okumu has made seven appearances to date, contributing to two clean sheets.
