The more money that Philippe Clement can bring in during the summer the better as Rangers look to rebuild a squad that could see several departures.

Six players are out of contract in the summer with only one of them, John Lundstram, expected to stay with the Gers boss clearly a fan of the powerhouse midfielder.

Not only that, but there will be players in the squad who Nils Koppen will be trying to move on which will not only free up space on the wage bill but also money to fund potential purchases. News that Philippe Clement could be heading for a £2.5m windfall already will be music to the Rangers manager’s ears.

Rangers look to have one hurdle to Sam Lammers deal

The obvious names are players like Jose Cifuentes, Ben Davies and Kieran Dowell, who have either been written off already or nowhere near the first-team.

The other, is Sam Lammers.

With five goals and three assists in 12 games since moving to the Eredivisie, the 26-year old has found his best form since leaving his homeland to join Atalanta in 2020.

It might be a coincidence, but he is also playing as a number nine, the position where his potential was first seen, an observation the player himself has made about his time at Rangers.

How Sam Lammers could be set for permanent Utrecht move

Utrecht manager Ron Jans has been happy with his winter acquisition as they push for European football after a run of good performances that have coincided with Lammers leading the line.

There has also been a hint at a longer stay, as reported by The Rangers Review:

“We are very happy with Sam. He plays good football and he is a great guy.

“If he would like to stay longer, we will do everything we can.

“However, there are factors that you cannot control…Rangers and money.”

After years of underperforming and being moved from pillar to post, Sam Lammers need to find somewhere where he can enjoy his football again because, at Rangers, you could see he was carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders at times.

When asked about whether or not there had been any talk about a permanent move, he said:

“There have been no discussions yet, but I am having a good time, so they will be held.”

On the face of it, it looks like the only thing blocking any potential summer move is finances.

Should Utrecht qualify for Europe you would like to think that they would take the low risk option of moving for Lammers when they know how well he fits into their club.

If they don’t, at the very least, Lammers has shown that he can still be a good footballer – if played in the right position.
