Danny Rohl is reportedly eyeing a reunion with Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Pierce Charles at Rangers.

Charles is expected to leave Sheffield Wednesday following the club’s relegation and financial issues.

Rangers can sign the keeper for a discount as he has just another year left on his contract at Hillsborough.

Alex Rae tips Rangers and Pierce Charles to be a good fit

Alex Rae believes that Charles would be a good signing for Rangers if they manage to secure his services.

The former Gers midfielder has worked with the goalkeeper in Northern Ireland’s Under-19s setup and has been impressed with him.

In his view, if the Ibrox outfit can snap up his services, they will get someone who would be an asset not just on the pitch but also in terms of future transfer fees.

Rae has backed the 20-year-old to play in the biggest games in the world if he manages to stay injury-free.

He told the Daily Record: “I had Pierce with the Northern Ireland Under-19’s. He gives the game a completely different dimension.

“People have said to me he’s too small. But I say he’s not because he’s so agile.

“He’s got such quick feet that he gets around the goal. And his distribution is just on a different level. He’s a really top player and if Rangers could get him they’d have a massive sellable asset on their hands.

“He’d play more games, get exposure in Europe, so a move there would be great for both parties.

“To me, Rangers is the top club in the world. But if Pierce stays injury-free, I can see this kid, with his temperament, becoming a goalkeeper worth a hell of a lot of money who plays in some of the world’s biggest games.”

Is the plan underway to phase out Jack Butland?

There could be a plan underway to phase Jack Butland out and potentially make him the second choice keeper.

While the Englishman has been decent, he has not been one to set the world alight and has made errors from time to time.

It could be time to rebuild the side with a young ball-playing goalkeeper as Rohl does want his team to comfortably build out from the back.

If he wants Charles at Ibrox, he trusts the Northern Ireland international to do a good job and handle the pressure that comes with representing Rangers.

The Gers could play in the Champions League next season, so keeping two keepers competing for the number one spot may not be the worst idea either.
