According to the Sunday Mirror (1/9; page 73), Rangers failed with a bid to sign Phil Foden this summer.

The 19-year-old is viewed as one of England’s brightest young footballing talents and is rated at a whopping £22.5m by Transfermarkt.

He made 13 appearances in midfield for Premier League winning Manchester City last season, scoring once. He also scored a penalty in City’s Community Shield victory over Liverpool at the beginning of the campaign and is an established England U21 international.

However, he’s been limited to just 10 minutes of top-flight league action during the opening games of the season, with squad spots in Guardiola’s team hard to come by.

It seems Gerrard hoped that competition for places at the Etihad would convince his club to make him available for a season-long loan to Ibrox.

Obviously, Rangers have plenty of central midfielders in their squad already. However, this creative young talent would have potentially added real X-Factor in that area.

Vision and quality was something certainly missing from the Gers’ Old Firm display on Sunday afternoon, so perhaps Gerrard was wishing then more than ever that Foden had made the switch.

However, despite additional suggested interest from the likes Roma, Guardiola wanted to hold on to his young starlet.

It’s a case of what may have been here, then, and with the transfer deadline just over 24 hours away, Gerrard has advised fans in a transfer update that any further arrivals are unlikely [RangersTV].
