Rangers exit continues 40-year academy striker failure

Robbie Ure scored on his Rangers debut this season and the future looked bright for the talented teenager.

The Scotland youth international had the frame and potential to make it at the Light Blues, however, his future now appears to lie elsewhere.

An appearance on trial to UEFA Youth League winners Alkmaar suggests that Robbie Ure is leaving Rangers which, again, shows how hard it is to make it as a forward at the club.

It’s been 40 years nearly since Robert Fleck made his Rangers debut and there doesn’t seem to be an end to the drought of home grown strikers to impact the first team.

John Fleck looked like a number ten but has made a good career as a more defensive midfielder, Ryan Hardie has done well since leaving Ibrix and Andy Little flattered to device in Scotland’s lower leagues.

Ross McCormack could be considered as the only one who really got away given the number of goals he scored in England and the fees that clubs paid for him.

He had a couple of moments in a Rangers shirt but he never made the impact that Robert Fleck did.

An established, regular member of the forward unit is the stuff that fans dream of in terms of academy players.

If Robbie Ure does leave Rangers, Zak Lovelace would appear to be next in line.

Tony Weston has left after being considered a promising signing at 16 but Ure wasn’t on the same released list, the club must have offered him a contract to not include him immediately.

The biggest issue is the Premier League.

Rory Wilson and Dire Mebude would both have played for Rangers last season but for their decisions to head south.

Robbie Ure had a similar decision to make, stay at Rangers and work on his game or head somewhere else looking for first team football.

Forty years though…
