Rangers have been dealt an apparent transfer blow after reported target Marijan Cabraja’s agent hinted that the player doesn’t see his future in the Scottish Premiership [Daily Record].
Cabraja claimed earlier this month that ‘contact had been established’ with Rangers following initial reports of interest from Ibrox [Scottish Sun].
Since then, the 23-year-old left-back has turned down an offer from MLS newcomers Austin FC [Scottish Sun].
However, it seems that was because the player is holding out for a move to a ‘top five’ league rather than a switch to Rangers.
“The opinion is that in the next six months the player will break into the A national team and with that, there will be an offer from the top five leagues,” said Cabraja’s agent, Denis Selimović [Daily Record].
“That [a move to the MLS] it is not good for his career, that he loses the possibility of the A national team, that he has greater opportunities to break into the national team from Gorica.”
A move to Ibrox hasn’t been categorically ruled out as yet, but it looks as though if an offer arrives from the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga or Ligue 1, Rangers won’t be able to land the player.
The Gers already have two left-backs on the books in Borna Barisic and Calvin Bassey, but given the consistently high level of the former’s performances, it’s expected that big bids will come in for him in the summer.
Cabraja has made 14 appearances in the Croatian First Football League for third-placed Gorica so far this season, scoring once and registering two assists.
There are a number of other players reportedly on Rangers’ radar, though, and two of them scored in the Championship on Tuesday night as their performance levels lift ahead of the January transfer window.
