Rangers links to Wales international winger Rabbi Matondo intensify as fellow Ibrox target Angelo Fulgini fails to travel with the Angers pre-season training camp.
News broke over the last 24 hours that Rangers appeared to be winning the race to sign Schalke winger Matondo amid interest from the Premier League and Old Firm rivals Celtic.
Originating from the comments of French journalist Loic Tanzi, the story is now being carried by the likes of Sky Sports who are reporting Rangers are “closing in” on the player.
Reports earlier in the summer had suggested Schalke would be looking for around £3m for the 21-year-old but there is some conjecture regarding a fee online.
Goal journalist Marc Mechenoua is claiming that Rangers will pay around £1.8m for the winger, pipping French sides like Troyes and Lorient to his signing.
Given that Schalke signed Rabbi Matondo from Man City in a deal worth potentially £11m only a few seasons ago, this stands as an impressive piece of business if Rangers can get it done.
Matondo spent last season on loan with Cercle Brugge in the Belgian Pro League, netting an impressive 10 times in the division.
Rangers close on Matondo as Fulgini left out of Angers squad
The story concerning Angelo Fulgini has also been growing arms and legs after news broke of reported Rangers interest over the weekend.
Rangers have reportedly had “multiple bids” rejected for the attacking midfielder and former French youth international.
It’s being claimed that Angers are holding out for £6m for the player, who has been given assurances he can leave this summer, with Rangers amongst several clubs keen on the player.
Given the Gers will likely face competition from the Bundesliga and Ligue 1 for the midfielder, if a deal can be concluded it is another impressive piece of business at Ibrox.
According to Goal journalist Robin Bairner, Fulgini has been left out of Anger’s training camp squad ahead of the new season with his exit from the Ligue 1 club now seemingly imminent.
When asked about the potential of joining Rangers, Bairner believes the Ibrox side’s European exploits could be a defining factor in any deal.
Both Matondo and Fulgini would represent impressive new signings from Rangers and whilst neither deal has been concluded at the time of writing the interest appears to signal the Ibrox club’s intentions this summer.
Rangers have already made three international signings in the window, bolstering their squad with a net spend of around £300k as things stand.
