Rangers centre-half hunt could take unexpected Nottm Forest twist: view

Rangers are looking for a new centre-half, preferably left-sided, and in Scott McKenna there is an option that ticks a lot of boxes.

At first glance, this might seem like a big reach given where the Scotland international made his name, however, he has progressed after being freed from the shackles of McInnes-ball.

Also, Rangers need home-grown players and Scott McKenna could be an affordable addition to Michael Beale’s squad amid links to his teammate Jonathan Panzo.

When the former Aberdeen defender signed for Nottingham Forest to partner Joe Worrall, few thought that it would be a partnership to get them promoted into the Premier League.

Even fewer would have thought that it would be one to keep them there.

McKenna has learned to be more spatially aware rather than just man-marking all the time.

How Rangers-linked Jonathan Panzo and Scott McKenna compare

As Steve Cooper continues to spend money and with just a year left on his current deal, Rangers could give Scott McKenna a way out.

Looking at his numbers compared to fellow Forest defender and Rangers-linked target, Jonathan Panzo, it is clear to see where his weaknesses lie.

As an out and out defender playing in the SPFL, McKenna would probably be a great signing, adding a robustness that some fans feel that Ben Davies lacks.

However, if you were Rangers manager, would you sacrifice Ben Davies’s ability on the ball for Scott McKenna’s physicality?

In Panzo, Rangers could be looking at a more rounded player.

One that would be just as happy at left-back as he would be in the middle.

Rangers need more than just someone who will win headers and duels, hence the reason Nikola Katic was sold.

McKenna has shown for Scotland and in the Premier League that he can be a good defender though and if the price was right, at 26-years old it would make a lot of sense, especially if Ben Davies is sold.

He’d need to learn how to pass and dribble though!
