Rangers captain James Tavernier speaks out amid links to Man United

Rangers captain James Tavernier has given his first interview since high-profile links to Manchester United appeared in the press – and the message is clear. We go again.

Ibrox captain Tav, 29, etched his name into Rangers folklore by guiding the team to a legendary 55^th title success last season, going unbeaten in the Scottish Premiership in the process.

Contributing to 35 goals throughout the season – with his 19 strikes making him the club’s top goal scorer – Tav was name PFA Scotland’s Player of the Year the club’s Player of the Year.

Tavernier’s remarkable numbers are also made even more impressive by the fact that the athletic presence on the right is a wing-back.

This has apparently piqued the interest of more than a few Premier League clubs with Man U, Arsenal, Brighton and Norwich City all linked by 90min.com.

Those United links in particular have been mused over in recent days with the story claiming that Tav is considered a viable alternative to England and Atletico Madrid full-back Kieran Trippier, who is outside of United’s price range.

But none of this paper talk appears to have affected the Ibrox skipper who spoke to the Rangers website about his ambitions for next season.

“We are the champions, and we have got to remain that way this season, so it is down to us to give every last breath and every last ounce of energy to protect that this season,” said Tavernier.

“We have got to [remain focused] and add even more. We are always looking to improve and that is what we will be doing in pre-season.

“We have got to be making ourselves better and that will push us forward for this season for the Champions League qualifiers, and the boys want to aim for the group stages, and we want to do well in the league and in the cups.

“I always want to improve myself every single day and I know all the boys are as well. That is really good to see, and I want to be a better version of myself.”

It sounds like Tavernier is perfectly happy exactly where he is and Rangers will be hoping to see the best of James again next season.

These comments will also be bad news for Manchester United fans, who were excited about the prospect of the Rangers captain potentially joining their club.
