Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has suggested that there’s still a possibility that Alfredo Morelos could leave Ibrox, despite the main international transfer window closing almost two weeks ago, as quoted by the Glasgow Times.
Morelos was the subject of speculation throughout the summer and at one point, a move to Lille looked as good as done [Sky Sports].
However, the Gers’ asking price of around £20m wasn’t met and the striker remained at the club.
Plenty of Bears breathed a sigh of relief when the main window closed on 5 October and the likes of El Bufalo and Ryan Kent were still on the books.
Yet, Qatar Stars League champions Al-Duhail have since been linked with Morelos [Daily Record], who suggested whilst away on international duty that he may soon have a decision to make regarding his Rangers future [Daily Record].
Speaking on Friday, Gerrard admitted that there’s still a chance the forward could head for pastures new.
“On many occasions, it was a thing I had to manage from day to day because I didn’t know myself whether there was going to be a bid for him or whether he was going to be sold,” he said, as quoted by the Glasgow Times.
“He’s a fantastic player and he’s still in the door. So we will use that to our benefit. How long he is going to be here for I don’t know. There are still certain windows open so I don’t think we are totally though the woods just yet.
“But from a selfish point of view, I want as many good players available to me from now till the end of the season as I can because it will give me a better chance of being successful. Selfishly, I am happy.”
Gerrard suggests Alfredo Morelos could still leave Rangers – Verdict
When the main transfer window closed it looked as though Morelos would remain a Ger at least until January.
It was only a few days later when the report alleging Al-Duhail’s interest emerged but even at that stage, few supporters likely considered Qatar as a genuine option for El Bufalo.
However, it seems Gerrard thinks there’s still an outside chance that a major offer could come in for the 24-year-old.
Qatari clubs have until 25 October to complete deals.
For the first time since the manager’s arrival at the club, though, there’s real strength in depth in terms of strikers at Ibrox.
Switzerland international Cedric Itten got off the mark for the Gers at Fir Park in late September, Jermain Defoe is back available and while Kemar Roofe is likely to miss Saturday’s Old Firm, the former Leeds star is back in full training following a calf problem.
