Rangers have received a something of a boost in their bid to hold onto Alfredo Morelos.
The Chronicle reports that Newcastle United are interested in El Bufalo, but that all transfers have been ‘placed on hold’ at the Magpies.
That’s because Rafa Benitez is undecided on a contract extension.
It’s suggested that, understandably, Newcastle will not sanction any major business until the manager makes a call on his future.
Furthermore, it seems that although the Premier League club is keen on the striker, he’s just one of ‘dozens’ of players they have scouted in recent times.
Hoffenheim’s Joelinton, Club Brugge’s Wesley Moraes and Jean-Phillipe Mateta are others said to be under the microscope.
It seems that it will be some time yet before Newcastle are in a position to move for Morelos.
Clearly, managerial stability is taking precedence. Even if Benitez commits his future to the club, though, it’s far from guaranteed that the Gers man will be their top target.
Interest in El Bufalo was inevitable after his goals return across 2018/19. He’s the first striker since Kris Boyd to net 30 in a season and the first to win the SPL’s top goalscorer award since Kenny Miller.
We’re only in June and the club will need to stay strong to keep interested parties at bay.
Ideally, Morelos stays for another season, and then the club can cash in on their asset.
