Rangers attacker Rabbi Matondo is now “free to leave” Ibrox in yet another damning indictment of the club’s poor recruitment under Ross Wilson in the last few seasons.
According to Darren Witcoop of the Sunday Mirror, the Gers are looking to ship the 22-year-old attacker out after a disappointing first season at Ibrox yielded 0 goals in a series of uninspiring displays.
The journalist claims there is interest south of the border in the services of Rabbi Matondo as Rangers and Michael Beale press on with the club’s summer revamp.
“Wales international Rabbi Matondo is free to leave Glasgow Rangers this summer,” tweeted Witcoop.
“Matondo spent a loan spell with Stoke in 2021 and could return to English football after being made available by the Scottish club.”
The suggestion the player could move down south has also been backed up by leading Rangers media partners Heart & Hand, who were responding to questions about interest in the player.
Taking to Twitter, the outlet said: “Several Championship clubs interested but no bids.”
Previous reports have suggested Rangers would be open to offers for the Welsh international winger.

Rangers signed Rabbi Matondo on a reported £2m deal last summer from German side Schalke 04, the winger coming off an impressive on loan with Cercle Brugge in Belgium.
Given Schalke had paid Man City £11m for the Welsh international earlier in his career, there was suitable fanfare that this could be a major coup for Rangers, who’d held off interest from elsewhere to sign the player.
In doing so, Rangers also reportedly stumped up a whopping £28k-per-week on wages for the winger, who reportedly earned £1.5m last season despite contributing effectively nothing productive to the side.
Michael Beale has commented on the player’s confidence being dented, but when Rangers put forward such a substantial outlay on wages a club at our level must expect a decent return.
Anything but this and the transfer has to be classed as a failure and so far the switch for Rabbi Matondo stands as a damning indictment of Ross Wilson’s Rangers tenure.
The outgoing sporting director, now of Nottingham Forest, was resoundingly criticised for the club’s recent transfer business and the move for Rabbi Matondo stands as an expensive flop which has cost us big on the park.
If the winger does move on from Rangers this summer then we’ll wish him all the best but those who come into replace him have got to deliver more for the club, the fans and themselves.
