Rangers and Everton linked 33-goal striker ‘makes contract decision’

Rangers-linked Al Duhail striker Michael Olunga will be staying in Qatar next season after reportedly agreeing a new contract with the Stars League club.

Kenyan outlet Pulse Sports are reporting that whilst the news is not yet announced, Michael Olunga “will stay” in Qatar next season after signing a contract extension.

The report claims that Olunga is now set to join up with his teammates in an Austrian training camp ahead of the new season in news that will delight the supporters of the Qatari side.

The 29-year-old Kenyan international striker was on explosive form last season netting 33 goals in 29 games and firing Al Duhail to the Qatari title.

As a result of the towering Kenyan international’s form it had Rangers linked with a move but the Ibrox club were not the only team said to be interested.

There were reportedly internal discussions regarding a potential move from Everton, something alluded to by Pulse Sports, whilst the report also makes mention of links to Dutch club FC Utrecht and Turkish giants Galatasaray.

Michael Olunga follows Hernán Crespo at Al Duhail

Interestingly, the reports come at the same time that Al Duhail have announced a contract extension for their manager, the club currently being led by none other than legendary Argentine striker Hernán Crespo.

The former Inter Milan and Chelsea striker led Al Duhail to a treble last season and the 48-year-old has signed a one-year extension to his contract and there are few names better for Michael Olunga to be working under than the legendary striker.

Whilst Rangers were linked with a move for the Kenyan international, the reports never really threatened to get off the ground with the Gers’ interest firmly set elsewhere.

The Ibrox side had already added Abdallah Sima (Brighton) and Sam Lammers (Atalanta) to the club’s attack before sealing a deal for top summer target Cyriel Dessers (Cremonese).

Rangers also continue to be linked with a move for Feyenoord striker Danilo and as Michael Olunga signs a new deal at Al Duhail, one wonders if his signing was ever a realistic Ibrox prospect.

Interestingly, another report on the Harambees striker suggests that even if wanted to, a move to the UK was never a possibility due to the striker being ineligible for a work permit.
