Sam Lammers could leave Rangers within the next 48 hours with FC Utrecht closing in on a deal to bring the former PSV Eindhoven forward back to the Eredivisie on loan.

It’s fair to say this is a departure which won’t have many Ibrox matchgoers mourning a rather premature parting of the ways.

Sam Lammers arrived at Rangers in a £3.5 million deal hoping to recapture lightning in a bottle – that prolific Heerenveen spell in 2018/19 very much the exception rather than the rule in the forward’s otherwise very underwhelming career – but the Glasgow giants appear to have lost faith in the 26-year-old already

And who can blame them, really?

Sam Lammers set for Rangers exit

Reports emerged today, via De Telegraaf reporter Jeroen Kapteijns, that Lammers was likely to be on his way back to the Netherlands with FC Utrecht. STV Sport, meanwhile, believe that an initial loan deal could be completed within the next 48 hours.

Unlike fellow Eredivisie export Cyriel Dessers, who has found some form since the appointment of Philippe Clement, Lammers continues to resemble a man running through treacle in Rangers blue.

In 31 appearances, he’s scored only two goals from his attacking midfield – or ‘number ten’ – role.

He’s started only one of the last nine Scottish Premiership games under Philippe Clement, Todd Cantwell overtaking him in the Rangers pecking order. Clement has admitted that he would be tempted to try out Rabbi Matondo in a more central role too, the jet-heeled Welshman having produced some of his finest performances as a ‘second striker’ in Belgium for Cercle Brugge.

“Rabbi Matondo can play also central, and played well in Belgium as a second striker,” Clement said Christmas.

“He is an electric player. So fast one-on-one.”

Back to the Eredivisie

Rangers have been linked with a deal which would see Clement reunite with his former Club Brugge forward Emmanuel Dennis, but those reports – and those suggesting Steven Alzate could arrive from Brighton – were played down over the weekend.
