Pundit suggests Rangers have ‘no chance’ of signing target who could cost £7m

Rangers are keen on Bristol City’s FA Cup hero Tommy Conway but one former Scotland international believes that the Scottish Premiership giants would have to part with a fee in the region of £7 million.

Tommy Conway needed only three minutes to give Bristol City the lead against West Ham United in the FA Cup third round, introducing his stylish finishing and dead-eyed composure to a far wider audience in the process.

The Scotland under-21 striker has quietly and effectively gone about his business for The Robins over the last 18 months or so. But, after sending West Ham packing earlier this month, Conway’s name is starting to appear with increasing regularity in the gossip columns.

There is interest not only from Rangers, per Football Insider’s Peter O’Rourke, but also in the English Premier League. Conway has admirers at Nottingham Forest, Wolves and Brentford.

Rangers like Bristol City striker Tommy Conway

“He is a talented boy,” Peter Grant, who spent 15 years at Rangers’ Old Firm rivals Celtic, tells Go Radio

“Going for the likes of Conway would cost you an arm and a leg financially.”

Given that Bristol City have earned colossal fees for the likes of Alex Scott, Antoine Semenyo and Adam Webster – all three now Premier League players – Grant is expecting Conway to command a fee which could test the depth of Rangers’ pockets.

“You are talking about £6 or £7 million, and that’s after you have had two good games. You have been on the television (that West Ham clash broadcast on the BBC). That’s what it becomes,” Grant argues.

“He is a talented boy. There are a few boys down in England, who are really good players, but (clubs in Scotland) have no chance of touching them.”

Scotland’s answer to Jamie Vardy?

Conway has scored 20 goals for Bristol City since the start of last term. Comparisons have been made with Leicester City icon Jamie Vardy, and there was certainly something very Vardy-esque about the way he raced onto a Konstantinos Mavropanos error and slotted home against The Hammers.

Rangers have signed two players so far this month. Fabio Silva joined on loan from Wolves while Mohamed Diomande’s arrival was confirmed on Friday.

According to reports, Philippe Clement’s side are now closing in on a new left-back. And it won’t be Cameron Pring – Conway’s Bristol City team-mate – but Jefte of Fluminense.
