Pete O’Rourke claims that Newcastle United wide man Jacob Murphy is close to agreeing a new deal at the club, in a possible transfer blow for Rangers.
In April, the Sun claimed that the Gers had registered interest in Murphy but faced competition from Watford, who were allegedly preparing a £6m bid, and then last month, the Chronicle backed up that report, asserting that the Gers had made ‘enquiries’.
However, the Chronicle report did state that the Toon were likely to trigger a contract extension and manager Steve Bruce previously made it clear that he wanted the player to stay [Shields Gazette].
The 26-year-old made 31 appearances across all competitions last season – many of which at wing-back – scoring three goals and notching four assists.
It was his best season at St James’ Park since his £12m transfer from Norwich in 2017 [Sky Sports] and it looks as though it has indeed earned him a contract extension.
Journalist, O’Rourke, tweeted an update on Murphy’s situation on Wednesday morning, asserting that the deal is almost done.

This is a potential blow for Rangers, given their alleged contact with Newcastle during the early part of the summer.
However, it was always relatively unlikely that Murphy would move to Ibrox.
As a lifelong Newcastle fan, he was never likely to turn down an extension if one was on the table and his importance to the side last season made it a near certainty that he would be offered fresh terms.
If a new deal is confirmed, he’ll be the latest Ibrox-linked wide player to become unavailable, after Carlos Mendes Gomes moved from Morecambe to Luton Town.
There’s still a chance that Steven Gerrard could strengthen on the right flank, though, with the Gers reportedly preparing a multi-million-pound bid for a player dubbed the ‘next Sadio Mane’.
