Rangers fans might be lamenting the one that got away as Koln midfielder Salih Ozcan signs with Borussia Dortmund.
The Gers were extensively linked to the ex-Germany U21 international last summer but the midfielder opted instead to sign on at Koln.
After an impressive season in the Bundesliga, Salih Ozcan has impressed watching scouts at Borussia Dortmund with earlier reports suggesting the player could be a long-term replacement for Belgian international Axel Witsel, who is set to leave the club.
Interestingly, due to a release clause in the player’s contract the Ozcan will only cost Dortmund a total of £5m [KSTA].
The deal will see the midfielder sign on at Borussia Dortmund until 2026 and follows a summer of investment at the club.
Salih Ozcan latest signing in summer of Borussia Dortmund recruitment
Rangers famously knocked BVB out of the Europa League last season and finished trophyless and second in the Bundesliga, something which cost ex-boss Marco Rose his job.
German-Croatian coach Edin Terzic has taken over with no fewer than five new players coming into the club.
Ex-Rangers target Salih Ozcan joins Niklas Sule, Nico Schlotterberck, Karim Adeyemi and Man City youth Jayden Braaf.
As Rangers missed out on Salih Ozcan last season, fans can at least take solace in the fact that if the reports were correct the Ibrox side’s scouting is on point.
This is a player who last season could’ve moved on a free and is now turning out for one of the biggest and richest clubs in the game.
Ahead of next season, Rangers fans will be hoping for links to similarly exciting targets only this time with any luck the Ibrox side will be able to get them over the line.
Meanwhile, Rangers reportedly remain in the hunt for an ex-Man United youth who is impressing in the Championship.
