Rangers are interested in 1 FC Köln midfielder Salih Ozcan, according to Kicker.
It isn’t the first time the Gers have been linked with Ozcan, who is currently at the UEFA European U21 Championships with Germany.
Last summer, the Light Blues, West Brom and Huddersfield Town were all said to be keen on the midfielder following a strong loan spell with Holstein Kiel [Kölner Stadt Anzeiger], but he opted to return to Köln to try to prove himself there.
He made 32 appearances across all competitions for the Bundesliga side during the recently completed season, as they avoided relegation courtesy of a playoff win over his former loan club.
The 23-year-old’s contract ends this summer, though, and it’s suggested that Rangers are interested once again.
Kicker reports that the Gers see Ozcan as a potential replacement if they lose current a midfielder to the Premier League.
It’s stated that they will wait until they have an ‘acute need’ before making their interest concrete and until then, his best hope of a move is to attract attention with strong performances in the latter stages of the U21 Championships.
It’s also asserted that Ozcan sees himself playing top-flight football next season.
It’s interesting that Rangers’ link to the versatile youth international has resurfaced and the fact that no transfer fee would be required is a major boost.
Back in 2017, Ozcan was listed by FourFourTwo as one of the top 40 teenage players in the world and although he’s not quite kicked on as expected since then, he’s clearly extremely talented and played in a top league last season.
It’s suggested that the Light Blues aren’t in any rush to swoop and would prefer to see how their own situation develops first.
However, it’s already clear that reinforcements are needed in the middle of the park, with Ryan Jack’s persistent injuries an area of concern and Bongani Zungu returning to Amiens.
Ozcan could be a strong, cost-effective option to provide better depth and delaying would be risky at a time when clubs across Europe are hunting for bargains.
In other news, Rangers have received a big boost regarding a rapid 16-goal star.
