Once Rangers-linked bluenose goalscorer set for £1m overseas transfer – report

Once Rangers-linked bluenose Lawrence Shankland is set for a £1m transfer to Belgian top-flight club Beerschot, according to 90min.com.

Shankland grew up a Rangers fan and was pictured at Ibrox before his career began to take off.

A dream move looked possible in the relatively recent past, with the Gers credited with interest in him when he was netting prolifically for Ayr United during the 2018/19 Championship campaign [Scottish Sun], after his 2019 move to Dundee United [Daily Record] and in August 2020 by Talking Football host Bill Young.

However, it appears that the Light Blues were never suitably convinced to table a formal offer.

His haul of nine goals and five assists last season was disappointing and, for some Rangers fans, proof that their club was right not to swoop.

However, he’s started 2021/22 well, with three goals in five matches, and is now reportedly primed for a move overseas.

The 25-year-old was left out of United’s squad to face Rangers at Tannadice on Saturday afternoon amid interest from Beerschot and now 90min.com reports that a deal has been agreed.

The Belgian club reportedly had several bids rejected but have now come back with an improved offer of approximately £1m which has been accepted and personal terms are not expected to be an issue.

It’s an interesting potential move for the Scotland international and Beerschot’s need for a goalscorer is clear as they are rooted to the bottom of the table after three matches, having scored just two goals.

The Rangers support has been split on the idea of moving for Shankland for some time.

The fee mentioned here proves he was affordable but, right now, it’s hard to argue that he’d be a better option than any of the forwards currently at Ibrox and it looks like a dream move for the Glasgow-born forward is off the cards for at least a while yet.
