MLS outfit Minnesota United are reportedly the latest club to launch a bid for South Korean striker Cho Gue-sung as links to Rangers are tempered in the press.

The US side have reportedly bid £4.1m ($5m) to sign the 24-year-old Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors star, who is also attracting interest from Celtic, Mainz and Ferencvaros.

At least that’s according to the likes of Korean football journalist Jason Lee, who made the claim on his official Twitter account.

The report comes after Rangers were linked with a move for the player earlier in the week as news spread of a Celtic bid for the player.

Sky Sports are claiming that Celtic have lodged a £3m bid for the striker – who scored twice for South Korea at the Qatar World Cup – whilst Rangers are only monitoring the striker’s situaton.

Rangers yet to make a bid for Cho Gue-sung

With Celtic said to be some way down the line regarding a potential deal, the links to Rangers had initially raised suspicions amid the Ibrox support.

Bundesliga outfit Mainz are also said to have lodged a bid “similar” to Celtic’s whilst Ferencvaros join Rangers in merely monitoring the situation.

Rangers have never signed a player from South Korea whilst Celtic have had the likes of midfielder Ki Sung-yueng and right-back Cha Du-ri on their books before.

The Parkhead side also have a substantial East Asian contingent at the club with January signing Tomoki Itawa becoming the sixth Japanese player to sign for the club under Ange Postecoglou.

Having scored six goals in 20 appearances for his country, 6ft2 striker Cho Gue-sung is one of the highest rated players in the K-League and has scored 16 goals in 45 games since joining Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in 2020.

Ex-Man United star Ji Sung-Park is the technical director of Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors and is said to be in Europe to negotiate a switch.

Meanwhile, another Rangers-linked striker has just banged in a hattrick.
