Leeds United-linked Rangers player officially set to leave Ibrox

Rangers talent James Maxwell, 20, has officially announced his departure from Ibrox amid links to the likes of Premier League Leeds United.

The talented left-back was at one point considered amongst the brightest prospects at Ibrox but the defender failed to break through into the top team before his departure.

Spending last season on loan at Ayr United, James Maxwell had an impressive campaign where he notched six goals in 37 appearances.

But despite this the player has not renewed his contract at Ibrox and announced his departure via social media.

“Thank you Rangers FC for everything, met friends for life and had many great experiences,” said Maxwell [Instagram].

“Excited to see what’s up next.”

Where next for Rangers’ James Maxwell?

The move to Ayr United was the latest in a couple of loan moves from Rangers, where James Maxwell also impressed at Championship Queen of the South in 20/21, playing 32 times and scoring five goals

What’s next could certainly be very interesting for Maxwell amid a series of interesting and varied links elsewhere.

James Maxwell was linked to Leeds United as early as January after his impressive form in the Scottish second tier reportedly had the Premier League club taking notice.

The left-back is also being linked to Scottish Championship Partick Thistle [the Herald] with the Jags said to be very keen on Maxwell’s signature.

Partick Thistle boss Ian McCall worked with James Maxwell during his time as Ayr United manager.

Meanwhile, Rangers are being credited with a serious interest in a once £11m-rated now Bundesliga-bound winger.
