Leeds United dealt Romain Perraud blow amid links to Rangers alternative

Leeds United have reportedly “cooled” interest in a major left-back target as links persist to Rangers star Borna Barisic.

The Elland Road club is on the hunt for a new left full-back with Macedonian star Ezgjan Alioski set to leave the club at the end of June.

Back-up left-back Barry Douglas – who spent last season on loan at Blackburn Rovers – has also been released and could be set to join Bristol City.

Alongside Barisic, Brest full-back Romain Perraud was considered amongst Marcelo Bielsa’s main targets heading into next season.

A 22-year-old Frenchman who is in demand ahead of the summer window, according to the Mirror Leeds are stepping away from links to the player.

The Lilywhites had previously been linked to Perraud by Le10 Sport but now reports from L’Equipe are suggesting Newcastle United and Southampton are leading the hunt for the player.

That report believes that Southampton have stolen a march on the competition and could be closing in on an £8.5m move for the full-back.

Leeds United have been linked to Rangers star Barisic routinely over the last couple of seasons with Croat outlet Sportske Novosti even claiming the club made an £8m bid for the player last summer.

Football Insider claimed earlier last week that agent Simon Conning has been recruited to sound out interest in the Croatian international with Leeds mentioned.

At 28, if the money is right there’s every chance we could see fan favourite Borna move on in this window and fans will be disappointed to hear the situation surrounding Leeds and Perraud.

But currently recovering from injury on international duty with Croatia, the player himself is certainly in no rush to leave Ibrox.

“That club is unique. When it creeps into your heart it stays there forever. I can just say I love Rangers. Honestly,” said Barisic.

“Offers are normal in football but when I talk about the club and the fans, it is a big wonderful family. They totally won me over.

“I had bad times too, we didn’t win the league for the first two seasons. But now that I see how full their hearts are, that sincere joy and love for the club, it’s fantastic.”

Leeds United aren’t the only ones who’ve been linked with a move for Borna in this transfer window either.

The full-back is also reportedly a target for one Premier League club who’ve already begun loosening the purse strings ahead of the new season.
