Last-ditch Rangers bid, interest in two others, duo’s exit chances – Transfer deadline day state of play

Rangers fans are praying they will see some transfer activity from the club on transfer deadline.

Rangers have not done a lot of January transfer business having signed Rafael Fernandes on loan from Lille to add another option at centre-back.

Many feel they could have done with at least another body in that area – as well as further forward in the wide areas and at centre-forward.

Today is the last chance to do anything and while there is obviously the possibility, time is running out and there have been suggestions from some sources the club will not be active.

But Philippe Clement admitted some additions were necessary, explaining:

“We had meetings about players who have the level to help the team and to help us get to the next level.

“We will see now in the next couple of hours what’s possible for the club.

“It’s not my decision to take.

“We had clear talks about profiles, about players.

“Then it’s about the club, if it’s possible or not. I will see.”

Here is the current lay of the land at Rangers at the start of transfer deadline day.

Rangers last-ditch Yorbe Vertessen bid

It is being claimed that Rangers have made a last-ditch attempt to persuade Union Berlin forward Yorbe Vertessen to join them.

The 24-year-old is on the verge of signing for Red Bull Salzburg in Austria but reports out of Belgium are suggesting Gers are trying to force him into a U-turn.

It is claimed an enquiry is in for the player, who will be known to Rangers technical director Nils Koppen. Vertessen can play as a central striker but also as a winger on either flank.

But the reports came with a warning it would be difficult to do and it does indeed look like Gers have been too late.

Bobby Clark

Rangers have been linked with a loan move for Bobby Clark, the former Liverpool midfielder now, ironically, at RB Salzburg.

There is also interest from the English Championship and it remains to be seen if Gers will make their move.

Lyall Cameron chance?

There is believed to be a strong interest from Ibrox in Dundee midfielder Lyall Cameron, with a pre-contract very possible.

However, until that window closes there remains the possibility of something happening for here and now.

Dessers could leave Rangers

The interest in Vertessen could suggest there is a chance Cyriel Dessers does indeed move on from Rangers.

It had been thought he could now stay on until at least the summer given his recent form but signing another forward would make things a little bloated in that area.

Cagliari are one of the clubs strongly linked to Dessers and have just sold a striker, so may see their chance to swoop.

And Yilmaz?

Speculation continues to swirl around Ridvan Yilmaz too with interest from his Turkish homeland.

But Clement has appeared to suggest the left-back will be staying put.

He said: “He’s injured.

“We want to keep all our players that perform well.

“We can only let players go if we can replace them with better players, so I don’t expect that in the case of Ridvan.

“You never know with others, but if that’s the case, you need to be replaced by at least the same level.

“That’s what we agreed.

“You never know if something crazy comes in, but then there needs to be a replacement.

“So then it needs to go really fast.”
