Kris Boyd slams Nils Koppen ‘waste of money’ Rangers signing who is costing over £500k per game

Kris Boyd hasn’t been shy in criticising Rangers Technical Director Nils Koppen when the opportunity has presented itself this season.

Boyd slammed Rangers’ decision to promote Koppen back in December, claiming the former Director of Recruitment’s appointment as Technical Director was akin to ‘moving the deck chairs on a sinking ship’.

The former Rangers striker is also never one to shy away from controversy either, with Boyd recently tipping Greg Taylor for Ibrox when his contract at Celtic Park expires.

Kris Boyd is back in the press with another outspoken opinion this week too, suggesting that Nils Koppen got it all wrong by agreeing to stump up £4m before the final whistle has even gone this campaign.

Kris Boyd slams Nils Koppen ‘waste of money’ signing Oscar Cortes

Oscar Cortes joined Rangers on loan from RC Lens back in January 2024 and made an initially bright impression at Ibrox.

But after being cut down by a serious injury sustained against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park just seven games into his Rangers career, the winger has struggled ever since.

Despite the serious injury, Rangers pledged £4m to sign Cortes this summer after agreeing a contract extension on the initial loan deal from RC Lens.

But this campaign Cortes has once again struggled to break into the Rangers team with a raft of injuries contributing to what’s been a stop-start campaign.

Kris Boyd has seen enough to be convinced that Rangers are making a mistake by making the deal permanent and has urged Nils Koppen to go back over the fine print and find a way out of the transfer.

”If there is anyway Rangers can get out of this deal or at least try to then they’ve got to take advantage of it,” Boyd said.

”Because it’s what (£4m)? It’s a lot of money. There are other areas where Rangers need that money to spend, to get in players that are regular players that you can depend on turning up week in, week out.

”For me, it’s already been a waste of money if it’s just been wages that’s been paid so far and now tying into a longer term contract and spending (£4m), whatever it may be, it doesn’t look great for Rangers.”

Rangers paying over £500k per match to sign Oscar Cortes

Cortes lasted only 45 minutes as Barry Ferguson hauled the Colombian winger off the park against Aberdeen.

Whilst Ferguson’s hands were tied by Ross McCausland’s first half red card, the jury remains firmly out on Rangers trio Oscar Cortes, Danilo and Nedim Bajrami.

Boyd claims that whilst it is nice to see Cortes back, the winger’s contribution left a lot to be desired.

”It was actually nice to see him back on the pitch, albeit for 45 minutes,” Boyd said.

”At least we know where he is now but his performance (v Aberdeen) was nowhere near good enough for a Rangers player.”

In total, Oscar Cortes has now played 16 games for Rangers but that does not tell the whole story of a stop-start career in Glasgow.

The winger has only played 650 minutes of football in 15 months in Scotland or the sum total of 7.2 full matches.

Whilst Cortes is likely to play again for Rangers this season, that means Rangers will fork out £556k per match for the winger come the end of the season.
